The Choice That Saves Lives

Feral / Community Cats

Feral / Community Cats

Sumner Spay Neuter Alliance is committed to humane control of the large feral/community cat population in Middle Tennessee through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). We have traps available for loan. 'Community cats' is the current terminology for free roaming cats. These may be feral cats, or friendly cats who for various reasons are homeless.

Spay/Neuter for community cats not only prevents unwanted kittens, but also eliminates unpleasant behavior such as spraying, marking and howling. TNR is the only non-lethal, acceptable method to control the community cat population. Spay/Neuter prevents the 'vacuum effect' where other cats move in to use the resources left by cats removed through 'catch and kill' methods. Catch and kill has long been proven ineffective as a method of population control. At least 80% of friendly community cats and 100% of feral cats will be euthanized if taken to a county shelter. Fixed community cats in your neighborhood offer natural rodent control.
